Blog 01 – Every Journey (and Blog) needs a first step… this would be that.
Updated: May 4, 2018
Hi, welcome to the Paul Phillips 2018 blog. I was told to use this introduction to explain the reason for the new blog but seen as how that to me is the point of the actual blog I am not going to do that here. No, if you want to know why we are doing a blog when the blog will drop and what will be in it you are going to have read past the first paragraph. I will instead use this introduction to announce that we have finally settled on a name for the re-launched blog. I wanted to call it ‘Selling a Book, Editing a Book and Trying to Write a New Book’ but I was out voted. My title was too dry. Instead, we have decided to use the much more amusing ‘Three Books, Two Laptops and One Funny Blog’. In hindsight, I agree with this decision but I reserve the right to moan about it in blog two.
So with the introduction out of the way it is time to get down to business and discuss why I am doing the one thing I swore I would never do again and agreeing to a fortnightly blog. Well for once the answer isn’t they made me. Nope, this time I am fully behind and dare I say it even looking forward to producing a fortnightly blog. Lots of things are different this time, the biggest being that I now believe that I have a story to tell. Last time I was supposed to document the struggles of writing a second book but what it turned into was me promoting short stories, chatting about the publication process and occasionally mentioning the writing I had done the previous week. It was more a newsletter than a blog and if I have my way that won’t happen this time.
Now that isn’t to say that I won’t drop one of those blogs in the coming months. A big advantage to having my own site is that if we do have a short story to publicise, a themed blog or a blog that requires me to rant and rave like a mad man I am free to do that, but it will not be part of this series and will not even be saved in the same section. No the ‘Paul Phillips 2018 Blog’ section will be dedicated exclusively to this blog and this blog alone.
To answer the question of what will go in this blog I think I need to explain a little why I am so happy to be doing it. In my opinion 2018 is going to be a very strange and hopefully productive year for me. I have a book already published. I have a second book which just needs editing and I have the idea required to begin working on a third book. Like a say that is an odd year. I have never been one to keep a diary but at times I have often wondered what mine would read like. I have never imagined before that anyone would be interested in my musings or opinions but when I look at the various charts and excel spreadsheets I have saved on my laptop I might now be in a place that the year ahead is a story worth sharing with people.
So with my blogging head on, I am hoping that If I maintain my discipline and keep this on track the new blog could be used to tell the story of how one unorganised author negotiates his way through the struggles of editing, promoting and writing a book. I am intending to explain the struggles, the fun, the stress, the elation and the frustration all three of these processes can bring. It will be the first time in my life that I go through all three of these processes in one go and I really have no idea how I am going to juggle all of this or if I will be able to do it, but if I can’t at least the failure will give me an entertaining blog right?
It is going to be an honest blog. A blog that documents the good and bad experiences this year brings. I would like to read these blogs back in a few years and discover that they accurately explain the madness of juggling the three process while working nine to five. I may even try and make it entertaining in places. We will be keeping to a similar lay out to last time only with different headings. No longer will we be discussing each book separately no this time round we are going to instead talk about the three processes. For the first few it will be a work in progress but I am quietly confident that when it gets going it will be pretty damn good.
So with that said I am going to bring blog one, the introduction blog, to a close. I will be back February 20th with the second, but really the first, blog in the series.
