Hi, welcome to the Paul Phillips 2018 blog! This is the third in the ‘Three Books, Two Laptops and One Funny Blog’ series and as you will soon find out lots of exciting things are happening at Team Phillips HQ. Over the course of the next three sections, we will be discussing the promotional push for book one, the editing struggles for book two and the blank page that is haunting me in book three. All of this has allowed me to pick a relevant title this time around, however, the funny puns will be back soon enough!
Book One – Obsession You Will Always Be Mine – The Selling a Book Section
Well, this is an exciting place to start! I believe last time out we mentioned that the official promotional push was about to begin and I can confirm we are now underway. As followers of the Facebook and twitter page will know we received a large selection of ‘Obsession You Will Always Be Mine’ goodies including A3 Posters, A5 Flyers, Postcards and Bookmarks. They look fantastic and over the next few days and weeks we will be handing them out, hanging them up and generally promoting the heck of ourselves with our new material.
Alongside the great posters we have also been holding discussions with local libraries over events and potential promotional activities (more news next time) and had a few promising phone conversations with books stores in the Yorkshire area. I had expected to view these chats and phone calls as a pain in the bum. Anyone who knows me knows how much I should have hated walking into libraries and chatting to people or cold calling book stores and chatting about me but as it turns out talking about my book is surprisingly easy! I even managed to do an e-mail interview with my works magazine without too much panic.
All in all the march towards sales is carrying on and in many ways just starting to gather speed. With sales described as ‘very encouraging’ and a chart position on Amazon which keeps going up and down like a yo-yo, one is going well so far. We have lots and lots more to come (first news on it all will be featured either in a blog or on the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PaulPhillipsAuthor/) so give us a like to keep up to date with any Obsession news and maybe even a share to make your friends aware. Speaking of Facebook last week we took out a ‘Facebook Ad’ which has so far attracted sixteen new followers to the Facebook page and been seen by over four thousand people. At the last count fourty-six people had clicked the link and gone directly to the eBook page on Amazon. Delighted doesn’t do it justice!
And it isn’t just the Facebook followers that is helping us. So far Obsession has gained eight reviews on Amazon. We have six five star reviews and two four stars. This is pretty damn fantastic and I appreciate each and every one of the people who have taken the time to add a review as it really does help us out. I have read and seen a lot of evidence recently which shows that one of the simplest ways to grow a brand is via word of mouth. As you have read we are doing our bit but I would like to be a little cheeky and ask each and everyone of you that has picked up a copy of Obsession to give us a hand and add a review for the book. It doesn’t have to be five stars (honest) but if you have read and enjoyed the book please take a moment or two to type a mini review and give us a rating. It really will help us out so thank you in advance.
Away from the publishers, the twitter page (https://twitter.com/pphillips_ukuk) is growing almost hour to hour. With lots of posters, trailers and in some cases amusing tweets going out everyday we are quickly building an audience that I hope will follow me into both the Obsession book cycle and beyond.
It is a challenging thing attempting to find new ways to promote a book. Once the cover and synopsis are out there it is pretty much all down to me to come up with new and hopefully entertaining ways to tempt people into clicking the links. So far we have posters, so many posters, blogs and last week a fantastically successful ‘celebrity Obsession’ weekend. I am not sure how I will follow that up but know that I am, even now, plotting and thinking!
We shall leave the Obsession You Will Always Be Mine section there. I will be back in two weeks with lots more news and attempts to sell you my book. The links for Obsession and my other social media accounts can be found at the end of this blog.
Book Two – The Devil In Disguise – The Editing Section
Great news, I did it again. For longer term fans there will be little surprise and maybe even a small smile at the news that during EDIT FOUR it was spotted that I changed a character’s name midbook again. And not just any character, oh no this time round the central female character who the entire book revolves around. I am not sure how I manage it but I will forever be indebted to my heroic editor friends who give up their time to make sure these things are spotted well before the book reaches a publisher.
Shocking name changes aside there is very little left to be said in the editing section this time around. We have had two ‘full edits’ and one ‘grammar and spelling edit’ returned to me and just one more out there being worked on. Once this final edit is back in my hands I will make any suggested changes and all work on book three will be suspended for a week or two while I read The Devil In Disguise through one final time. I will attempt to read it as a book and not something I wrote, I will fail and I will tamper and change things as I go along. I will read it on a kindle, I will read it on a laptop and I may even read it out loud whilst locked away in a darkened room. I will no doubt decide that it is both the greatest book ever written and an utter waste of time that I should be ashamed to write. I will be told off for these mood changes and then and only then will I calm down enough to hand over a finished draft to my publishers. After that, it all (hopefully) begins again.
Book Three – Title To Be Decided – The Writing A Book Section
If you haven’t guessed it already, ‘blank page’ from the blog title is all about the writing section. I have hit a little bit of a brick wall and so far I have no idea how I am going to go round, through or over it. I am not panicking, there is no point. I know where the book is going, I know what I want to happen next I just don’t know how to get there. It doesn’t help that Obsession You Will Always Be Mine is still taking up so much of my time, damn book sales, but I am pretty confident that in the days ahead I will make it past the current blank page (for honesty’s sake I need to confess that there are actually seven lines on the page in question, but that doesn’t work as well for a blog title) and book three will be back under way. In preparation for this, I have read through my many pages of notes and I am still very confident in both the style of writing and the story itself. There is a dark, nasty, evil story to be told over the next few months, I just need to crack on and find a way to write it. Fingers crossed that in the next blog I will have a much more exciting update on the writing front.
I guess the heavy update to section one this time around proves the reason for agreeing to do this blog in the first place. There are currently three book projects all going on at the same time and despite my best efforts I only have so much time to dedicate to each. At the moment the promoting of Obsession You Will Always Be Mine is taking up the majority of my free time. Any new writing is having to be slotted in around the tweets, phone calls and meetings. Add to this the editing job for The Devil In Disguise and this week is the first time it hit me just how big a challenge I have on my hands. On the plus side, I do love this writing stuff so I am going to have to make time to get more words onto the page. I will be back in two weeks with an update on my search for time.
Until then thanks for reading and remember you can follow my writing career or purchase Obsession You Will Always Be Mine on any of the below links.
